On the lookout for UK’s top young entrepreneur
The search is on for the UK’s most outstanding young business person. And the stakes are high, with a £10,000 prize up for grabs.
Nominations are now open for the Shell LiveWIRE Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award.
The award is open to UK residents aged 16-30 who have been trading for between three and 18 months.
The prize includes a £10,000 cash injection to the winner’s business, plus exposure through media publicity for the winner and finalists.
Eight regional winners will be shortlisted and sent to London to present to the award’s judging panel, which includes ‘serial’ entrepreneur and Dragon’s Den investor Duncan Bannatyne OBE, ‘Twitter investor’ Simon Dolan, winner of The Apprentice UK Tim Campbell; and General Manager of UK Retail Shell Melanie Lane.
Previous winners of the award include:
• Jamie Murray-Wells (Glasses Direct) - the largest online retailer of prescription glasses in the world who now employs 70 staff and has a turnover of £40 million.
• Michael Welch (Blackcircles.com) - the UK’s largest online tyre retailer.
• Jenniver Irvine (The Pure Package) - a gourmet food home delivery service which has revolutionised dieting and healthy eating. She now has 20 staff and a turnover of over £1 million.
• Robert Matthams (Shiply.com), the 2009 winner, has since gone on to win a whole host of awards and accolades, attracting over 10,000 companies to his eBay-style reverse auction site for moving goods.
The overall winner for 2010 will be announced at an event in London on 13 October.
Nominations must be made online before 5pm on Monday, 6 September.
Meanwhile, Shell also offers £1,000 ‘Grand Ideas Awards’ for 16 to 30-year-olds who need funding to get a new business idea or project off the ground. Up to five cash prizes are handed out each month to the most innovative or unusual ideas submitted by new businesses in their first 12 months of trading. Nominations for the Grand Ideas Awards close on the last day of each month.
